January 30, 2009

deodorantDove has extended their line of ultra protective deodorants to include a new Cool Essentials line.

Try the cucumber and green tea scent. It does not overpower your perfume or body spray, but it will cover up odor and wetness.

Must Read: Smashed

January 27, 2009

smashedEvery once in a while, a really great book comes along that stays with you. You think about the character, you sympathize, cry, laugh, and cringe. You cannot put the book down.

Every spare moment I have had lately has been devoted to the memoir Smashed: the story of drunken girlhood.

Our narrator, Koren, is 14 when she takes her first drink, and she tells the tale of how drinking played a major role in her life until the age of 23 when she decided to quit drinking and actually be herself–sober.

No spoiler here: read the book if you get a chance ($12.50 at Target). Her tale is honest, almost like reading a diary. But she is a true writer in the way she describes certain scenes and emotions.

Smashed is a tale that anyone can relate to. It’s really about finding yourself and being yourself, no matter what the situation may be. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Almay Eye Makeup Remover Pads

January 15, 2009

Bid farewell to chunky leftover mascara clinging to your lashes!

This is my new “must have in the makeup bag”.

Almay’s eye makeup remover pads are oil free, and perfect for removing stubborn regular and waterproof mascara.

Also, as a contact wearer, I found the formula to only be tough on the makeup, not on my eyes.

Pocketbook Bonus: 80 pads cost under $7!

Best Mascara: L’Extreme

January 9, 2009

Want kick-ass eyelashes that look like they must be fake?

mascaraTry Lancome’s L’Extreme in Black.

But to achieve the very looong, lush lashes you must get the waterproof formula.

Beware: when they say waterproof they are not joking. The formula grabs hold of your lashes and does not let go easily.

I am going to try Almay’s eye makeup remover tonight, but if you’re in a pinch try using baby oil. Soap and water just won’t cut it.

Or let me know if you have any eye makeup removing secrets.

Mississippi holds highest teen birth rate

January 8, 2009

secret_life_american1I have blogged about teen pregnancy before, and I wish it was about declining rates and responsibility.

Instead, the number of young mothers is rising. And today, the Center for Disease Control said the state of Mississippi saw the highest increase in teen birth rate since 2006.

But Mississippi is not alone. Twenty-six states saw an increase.

So what’s up with teen pregnancy?

Let’s look to our school systems. My very best friend just texted me today to let me know that she has to teach young women in middle school about sex, but that sex is something intimate that married men and women do. Period. No one else, certainly not a young woman, is engaging in such behavior.

It’s this denial and the abstinance only programs/religious fears of sexual activity that stifles us and creates an increase in a problem instead of education for a solution.

And if you don’t know about sex, turn on the TV. Just last night, a main 16-year-old 90210 character found out she was pregnant.

And don’t forget about the “Secret Life of an American Teenager” where the main character is also pregnant.

If we don’t teach about sex, and all the complications that go along with it, we are doing an injustice to ourselves. A “problem” like teen pregnancy doesn’t just go away by looking the other way. Email us with your suggestions on how we can keep education growing and the rate of pregnancy declining.

54 percent of young adults post “risky behavior” on social sites

January 6, 2009

girl_on_computer1_21A recent study reports that 54 percent of young adults 18 or older post their “risky behavior” for all to see.

The study looked at random young adults on myspace and what they put on their pages.

Drug use, drinking, and sexual activity are all part of the “risky” posts that just about anyone can have access to.

My advice: always do a respect check before posting ANYTHING on the internet.

Think: Does that photo represent the way you want your friends, or your family to see you? Or does your profile contain things, intimate details that could reflect negatively on you, your friends/family, or even your employer?

Social networks like myspace are a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. But don’t forget that essentially everyone has access to the internet. This includes creeps and stalkers and bad people who may not have your best interest in mind.

Keep the conversation very PG when everyone can see it. And for the love of god, keep your sexy photos to yourself.

Good Advice from Oprah: What are you hungry for?

January 5, 2009

oprah2On today’s Oprah show, Oprah discussed her never ending battle with gaining weight.

She had some very good points that apply to anyone who has an issue with weight: rarely does significant weight gain come from just “pigging out”. It comes from the emotions you’re feeling. What do you reach for if you’re stressed? Angry? Sad? Bored?

Take a second and think about the feeling and how it translates on your plate.

Ask yourself: what are you really hungry for?

Oprah is embarking on a road to health in 2009. Not to be skinny, but to be healthy. And to finally accept her body.

That sounds like the perfect way to start off the year, and a great message for all women. Let’s learn to celebrate and accept, and ditch the negative thoughts and forces that lead to bad body image.

What are you hungry for?
