Quest for the Best: Nike Pro-Girls’ Sport Bra

October 31, 2008

Don’t let the word “girl” fool you.

This sports bra is for every woman: the 8-percent spandex blend means it gives just enough stretch to keep you in place while running, jogging, walking, or whatever sport you like to do.

Best part: you can pick it up at TJ MAxx for $10. I usually recommend Champion sports bras, but Nike is giving them a run for their money.

Jillian Michaels Workout for Wii

October 29, 2008

Are you a fan of NBC’s “Biggest Loser” show?

Now you can get the show’s crass trainer, Jillian Michaels, to kick your butt into shape, too.

New for Nintendo Wii, Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009 combines cardio, strength training, and a dash of her infamous personality to the simulated boot-camp game.

I have heard good things about the workout, but it’s all about pushing yourself to get the most out of your time. If you have tried the game, let me know if it’s worth the $90 price tag.

Dove Self Esteem Campaign

October 27, 2008

I’m sure you’ve heard about Dove’s real beauty campaign. The company’s ads feature real women using their products.

But did you know that Dove also has a girls only mission to increase the self esteem in young women?

Check out their latest YouTube video. It really reinforces the point that all day long we are bombarded by images of impossibly thin women that seem to have it all.

It’s not always easy to remember that health is important. And that doesn’t mean being a size 2.

STD Greeting Cards

October 23, 2008

If you are sexually active, always wear protection.

But, if you’ve gotten caught in the heat of the moment and made a bad mistake, you could be one of the hundreds of thousands of young women affected with an STD.

Putting the body issues and mental distress aside: do your partner(s) a favor and tell them the unfortunate news with an e-card.

I think this is actually a great thing. Telling someone that you are infected is a horrible situation, but it happens. All too commonly.

Do the right thing. Tell your partner(s) to their face, or at least send the card.

Help end the cycle of STDs.

Long John Silver’s New Low Cal/Fat Menu

October 21, 2008

I love fried fish as much as the next salt, but we applaud fast food giant Long John Silver’s for (finally) introducing a non-fried menu called Freshside Grille.

The new menu includes salmon, tilapia, and scrimp scampi. Look for the new, healthier, grub at a LJS by the end of the month.

Eat Breakfast, but not THIS Breakfast

October 17, 2008

I am sure you’ve heard breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

I used to scoff at this, but it’s true: breakfast will keep you from crashing mid-morning and chowing down on M&Ms, and people who eat breakfast are 30 percent less likely to be obese!

Nice.

But don’t think a cinnamon roll is the way to go!

Thanks to the gurus of Eat This, Not That, the Cinnabun was the single worst pastry to eat weighing in with more than 800 calories and more than 100 grams of carbs!

But the worst breakfast in America comes from Bob Evans:Stacked and Stuffed Caramel Banana Pecan Hotcakes.

These babies, or full grown pancakes, have almost 200 carbs, and more than 1,500 calories.

My suggestion: hard boil eggs and grill turkey baccon the night before. Throw the yolks away, and you have a protein packed (which will fill you up) low carb, low fat way to start the day.

Young Women and Cervical Cancer

October 15, 2008

Bravo to all the young women who decided to get the Gardasil vaccine that protects against cervical cancer.

One in four young women report getting at least the first round of the three round treatment.

Nearly 4,000 cervical cancer deaths are reported each year.

Or, if you haven’t had the shots, research the vaccine and consider what’s right for you. The vaccine is offered to girls as young as 11 or 12 up to age 26.

Splurge Alert: TurboLash Mascara

October 14, 2008

Obsessed with mascara?

You must try Estee Lauder’s TurboLash Mascara ($30).

With a quick twist of the tube, a vibrating wand is said to add volume, length, curl, and separation to your lashes.

I like this mascara for the va va voom factor.

You are going to get striking, thick, long lashes using this mascara. Although, I haven’t seen much curl yet, but I’ve only had it for one application.

If you love mascara like I do, pick it up exclusively at Saks. But if you’re more into the natural, soft look: save your pennies and try L’Oreal Bare Naturale ($10).

Get Moving: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 14, 2008

Although breast cancer is less likely to be found in young women under the age of 40, more than 250,000 young women (under the age of 40) in the U.S. are living with breast cancer.

Luckily, great organizations like the Susan G Komen foundation are always looking for a cure, and striving for better medicine and advanced treatments.

A fun, simple way to show you care-and burn some calories-is to sign up for the Race for the Cure.

Although I missed the Race in Birmingham AL last weekend, I did walk a 5K for the Step Out for Diabetes the weekend before. It’s such a rush to be surrounded by people who are passionate about the cause, and did I mention the free treats?!

But back to breast cancer awareness: don’t forget to check yourself: if you feel a lump, or anything unusal, don’t wait. Early detection could be the difference between life and death.

See your doctor immediately if you suspect something foul, and read up about what is normal and what is not when it comes your breast tissue.

CosmoGirl! Magazine Folds

October 10, 2008

Today, CosmoGirl! magazine announced they will be folding due to declining ad sales. December will be their last issue.

Or did CosmoGirl! fold because we’re just not that into it? Was it too much fashion, not enough substance?

I have always envisioned ywhealth magazine to be a fantastic source of everything you want to know about your health (i.e. your everyday life) without being boring or too technical.

Maybe the downfall of CG, one of the leading young women’s fashion magazines, is a step in the right direction of saying we deserve more, not just more celebrity gossip and what’s the hot sweater to wear this season.

What do you think? A shift in perception, or is the ad money really the issue?
